We absolutely love seeing our students shine in their creative field and pursue their passions. Introducing Sarah, makeup student and founder of Sarah T. Makeup and Cosmetics! Sarah has completed the first half of the MakeupMasters CUA51015 Diploma of Screen & Media and will be finishing off her qualification at the beginning of next year—but she’s already off to a roaring start in the industry with her own line of lashes.

We chatted to Sarah about her passion for makeup, her motivation to start her own business, and her goals for the future…

Hi! My name is Sarah. I have had a passion for makeup for so long and I am so grateful that I am finally getting to pursue my dream of launching my own cosmetic line. I have so far released a line of lashes and am hoping to launch my very own lip gloss in the next few months!

How did you know that you wanted to pursue a career in makeup?

I have been a dancer for as long as I can remember, which also means I have been doing my makeup for concerts and competitions for pretty much my entire life. I fell in love with the creative side of playing around with makeup and I knew that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I personally chose to study at MakeupMasters after the very first campus tour I had. The atmosphere was amazing and the staff were all so lovely and welcoming. I am so glad I chose the course I did; I’ve made so many amazing friends and have learned so much more than I thought I would in such a short amount of time!

What is your favourite kind of makeup look to do?

My favourite style of makeup to do is a full glam look. I love big lashes and different colours as well as trying to be as creative as possible. My favourite full coverage foundation for this type of look is the Maybelline Fit Me ‘Matte + Poreless’ foundation. I also love the Morphe 35b colour burst palette for creating multicoloured eyeshadow looks. And, of course, my favourite dramatic false lashes are from my own cosmetic line in the lash ‘Money’.

My favourite makeup trend at the moment is the use of graphic liner. I’ve seen so many makeup artists getting so creative with the use of different colours and designs on their faces and bodies. The detail in so many of these artists looks’ is insane!

Tell us about Sarah T Makeup & Cosmetics

Sarah T Makeup & Cosmetics has only been public for one week but it’s been in the works for many months prior to the launch. I got the inspiration from my mum—she started a very successful online business from home during the first wave of lockdown and she inspired me to do the same with the products I love.

During my first six months at The Masters I was taught so much about makeup and beauty as well as business, which is something I’ve been able to apply to my own business. One of our first projects we did was dedicated to creating, branding, and promoting our very own product, which helped me understand what goes on behind the scenes of a business. I’m so glad I have had assignments like that to look back on and help me now while launching my very own small business.

So far, I have a range of seven different lashes on my website, but there are three more pairs coming soon! My lashes range from natural to dramatic to accommodate all types of customers and their ideal style. On my website I’ve included photos of the lashes by themselves as well as on a model so that the customer can get a good idea of what the product will look like on their own face before they purchase. I will be launching a lipgloss soon, which is completely homemade and full of organic ingredients! I put a lot of care into picking names for my products, making sure my packaging is creative, etc.

My personal favourite is either the Kitty or the Money lashes. They’re two of the more dramatic lashes from my line and I love the way my eyes look in them. They’re perfect for a full glam look and I can’t wait to wear them out once restrictions are lifted!

Since starting my business, I’ve loved seeing the support and engagement I get from people. It is so nice receiving encouraging messages and love from people I know as well as my followers on social media! I’m very grateful for that. I’m only a small platform, so it can be difficult to gain exposure and reach new customers. Despite that, I’m taking all the opportunities that come my way and I’m determined to keep posting and promoting as much as I can!

What advice would you give to anyone considering starting their own business or studying at The Masters?

My advice to anyone who wants to start their own business would just be to GO FOR IT! There are always so many excuses you can come up with to talk yourself out of it, but you’ll never know what you’re capable of until you try. Just believe and invest in yourself!

For anyone considering studying at The Masters, I would strongly urge them to do so. I finished school after Year 11 and came straight to The Masters to study what I was passionate about: makeup. It’s been the best decision I ever made! I will have successfully completed my diploma by the time I’m 18 and will be ready to fully commit to running my own business at a young age. The Masters encouraged me to pursue what I’m passionate about and for that I am so grateful. The Masters is definitely a place I have loved studying and I’m sure anyone considering it would love it too!
