How to become a hairdresser in Melbourne?

There are two ways to become a hairdresser in Melbourne. You can begin your career as an apprentice in a salon. Our apprenticeship option allows you to study 1 day on campus per week and the remaining days will be spent in your salon. Apprenticeships generally take 3-4 years to complete. 

Alternatively, you can become a qualified hairdresser by completing a hairdressing course. We offer a FastTrack option for our SHB30416 Certificate III in Hairdressing. Our FastTrack option will take 12 months to complete. 

 

Do I need any previous experience?

No previous experience is necessary, all that we ask is that students have a minimum of grade 10 education. We don’t expect you to have any prior knowledge of barbering before applying.

 

How long does it take to become a hairdresser in Australia?

An apprenticeship will take 3-4 years to complete, whereas, our FastTrack option will take 12 months to complete.

 

What are classes like?

The SHB30416 Certificate III in Hairdressing involves both theory and practical work which will develop your skills and your ability to work as part of a team. 

Our classes are led by the industry’s finest educators through a collaborative learning environment and real salon experience through our student salon, Salon T.M.

 

How does the student salon work?

Salon T.M is a student training salon located on campus. The salon allows students to take their theoretical learning out of the classroom and apply it to fee-paying clientele. They provide a variety of hair services in a supervised environment.

Does the school offer industry experience?

Yes. We offer students a number of opportunities to get involved in the industry through our industry hub, Agency T.M. We operate Agency T.M to provide students with essential industry experience and complement our on-campus training. 

Students have the opportunity to work backstage styling models before their runway shows. We have worked with Viceta Wang, David Jones, Melbourne Fashion Week, Afterpay Australia Fashion Week and many more! 

We also have industry experts come in for masterclasses where students have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the industry. This is a great way for them to network and make connections. We have had guests such as Natalia Ann, Sharon Blain, Redken, Dario Contronio and many others visit us at The Masters
