One of the best parts about entering into a new year is the promise of new hair, fashion, and makeup trends. We love seeing the amazing looks that our favourite creatives on Instagram come up with and then trying to emulate them. In 2019 we saw the rise of ultra-highlighted cheeks, glitter eyeshadow, and monochromatic looks. Eager to see what’ll come next? Us, too! Here are our predictions for the hottest makeup trends in 2020.

Bright Blue Eyeshadow

Bright eyeshadow and eyeliner had a moment in 2019 and the trend doesn’t look set to stop just yet. Pink and coral were two of the more popular colours last year, reflective of Pantone’s 2019 colour of the year: Living Coral. Similarly, Pantone’s 2020 colour of the year—Classic Blue—will be showing up and showing off all year long in 2020.

Soft Glow

If 2019 was defined by dewiness and crazy highlighter illuminating our cheekbones, 2020 is all about emulating a soft inner glow. This trend gives the look of a natural radiance—think less “afternoon sun reflecting off a diamond ring”, and more “just got back from two weeks at a yoga retreat in Bali”.

All-Round Liner

It’s finally making a comeback: 360° liner has arrived in 2020. But instead of the basic blacks and browns, this liner trend will feature bold colours: blue, yellow, purple, red, green—even white.

Multicoloured Liner

Why stop at just one colour? We’re seeing an increase in bright, bold colours used in creative ways, and we can’t get enough! 2019 showcased monochromatic looks, using the same colour for eyes, blush, and lips. 2020 is going to be the year of multiple colours in a single look.

Ethical, sustainable, and cruelty-free

As we’re getting more aware of the impact our daily routines have on the environment, more and more people are moving away from products that aren’t sustainable or ethical. Vegan and sustainable cosmetics are on the rise as we become more conscious of our environmental footprint. Lots of makeup brands are also pledging to stop animal testing on their products, which is amazing! Click here for a list of Aussie cosmetics brands that don’t test on animals.

We can’t wait to see all these trends come to life on red carpets, Instagram, and in tutorials this year. Are you interested in studying makeup? Click here to check out our makeup short courses!
