She wants it, she gets it.

Jess knows exactly that working in Makeup is where she’s meant to be. For the usually shy Jess, it is surprising how confident and comfortable she can be working in the Makeup industry. She loves how she “comes out of her shell” every time she’s doing makeup for others, and making them more beautiful than they already are.

Now, Jess is starting on a new journey as a Mecca team member—something she’s had on her wish list for a long time. While she admits it can be challenging to juggle two jobs, school assessments, social life and her personal me-time; she knows what she wants to do, and she wants to “make it happen.”

We chatted to Jess to learn how she works on her Makeup career as a full-time student.

Jess R Makeup Student

Tell us about yourself. What was your path to TM and why did you choose to study the Diploma of Screen & Media (Specialist Makeup Services)?

I chose to study with The Masters Institute of Creative Education as my passion for many years was to be a makeup artist and I feel that the diploma that T.M. offers is an amazing experience and opportunity. From bridal makeup to SFX, this course goes in-depth and teaches you everything you need to know whether you want to be a freelance makeup artist, get into TV and film, or even work backstage at a runway. The trainers and the environment at T.M. is so incredibly supportive and I wouldn’t want to study anywhere else! Could not recommend it enough!

Tell us about your new exciting role!

Eight weeks ago I landed a job at Mecca as a summer host and Mecca have now offered me my dream role as a permanent makeup artist. The team are so supportive and friendly.

I cannot wait to see where my journey with the company goes as Mecca has always been a place that I would love to work at, and it has definitely exceeded my expectations so far.

Is there anything about working in-industry that has surprised you?

When I work in industry, I feel like I am where I’m meant to be. I come out of my shell as doing makeup for clients or models makes me incredibly happy, as it has always been my passion to be able to enhance people’s beauty and make them feel more beautiful than they already are. It surprises me how confident I am when working, as I always come across as a very shy person, but working in the makeup industry definitely boosts my confidence and I feel so comfortable in that environment. If you have a passion, work for it! It is so worth it in the end and you will love every second of it!

How did your role at MECCA come about?

I applied many times throughout the years as working at Mecca was definitely what I wanted to do. I have quite a bit of experience in the industry thanks to The Masters, and I feel like my diploma really got my foot in the door. My diploma will definitely be beneficial to me when working at Mecca, as I know what the industry is like and I have experience in everything makeup and skincare related. It’s really comforting knowing that I am starting a new journey with so much knowledge and experience.

How is it like to land a job as a student, and in the middle of a pandemic?

I definitely find it very challenging being a student and also having two jobs, especially in the middle of the pandemic. With assessments coming up, having shifts at work, and also trying to have a social life and time for myself, it can be quite stressful at times but at the end of the day I know that all of this stress will be worth it. I know what I want to do, and I want to make it happen.

Aside from your work at MECCA, have you taken on any opportunities through Agency T.M.?

At The Masters, I have been on two work experience jobs, one at the Viceta Wang Runway earlier this year, and one at the Asian Fashion Week right at the start of my Diploma last year. They were both amazing experiences, and definitely gave me an insight into what happens backstage at these events. Through my Diploma, I chose to start my own freelancing business as I was confident enough to start taking on my own clients. The Masters definitely helped me gain confidence into applying makeup services on others, and also made my passion for makeup stronger.

Do you feel TM helped prepare you to work in the industry?

Most definitely! If it wasn’t for The Masters, I’m not sure where I would be! The trainers and staff are so incredibly helpful and supportive as well as the students. The diploma I have studied is really in depth and teaches you everything you need to know about the industry!

What’s been the most valuable learning at The Masters so far?

Probably knowing that working hard and efficiently will get you to reach your goals. My trainers are very inspirational, and knowing what they have done to get this far in the industry makes me want to pursue my dreams and push myself. All the experiences that they have had in the industry is what I want to be able to experience later in life, so I will push myself in order to be able to get to where I want to be.

What is your advice for anyone starting their journey in the Makeup industry and considering studying with T.M.

My advice is be patient with yourself, and always think about what the outcome will be at the end of the day. I will be honest and say that this diploma is not easy, but it is worth it. Everyone at The Masters will support you through all of it, it is an amazing environment and you will love every second of it!

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to have a beauty studio and also work in beauty retail. I want to be able to do makeup full time!
