The Masters Institute of Creative Education were so excited to host the official 2018 UK F.A.M.E Team on campus for their Hair Expo castings. We took the opportunity to ask them the important questions that all emerging hairdressers want to hear.
We chatted to the four F.A.M.E Team members Ellie, Katie, Paddy and Peter, along with their mentor and global hair stylist Nick Irwin and Andreas, the Creative Director of Babyliss Pro.
Here are their top 6 tips for emerging hairdressers:
- Assist as much as you can! - Katie
Katie insists that you should put yourself out there and learn as much as you can from everyone that you assist. You can’t stop learning, right?
- Be positive and be present! - Paddy
Paddy inspired us all by encouraging emerging hairdressers and all creatives to be as positive as possible. ‘If you’re negative about your chances you’re not going to get anywhere. It’s who you think you’re not that holds you back rather than who you actually are.’ He also mentioned that it’s so important to be present and focused in any given situation and be as prepared as possible. Also, be on time!’
- Don’t stop until you achieve your dream. - Peter
Peter mentioned that self belief is crucial. ‘You need to believe in yourself, believe in your work and focus on what you want to achieve in your career. If you have a dream go for it and don’t stop until you’ve got that dream.’
- Research your field!- Ellie
‘If there’s a certain field you want to go into, research everything behind it. The more knowledge you have, the better.’ Ellie, we couldn’t agree more!
- Don’t sweat the small things and manage expectations! -Nick
According to Nick, he ‘[lives] by a mantra: only sweat the big stuff, don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s important that you don’t focus on things that don’t mean a lot. If there’s a big issue then address it but don’t stress yourself out worrying about small things. That stunts your growth as a hairdresser and happens a lot in our industry. My advice is to focus on the big picture!’ Nick also mentioned that it’s integral to manage expectations. If you promise something, it’s important to fulfill that.
We couldn’t have said it better, Nick!
- Stay focused and don’t lose sight of your dream. - Andreas
Andreas mentioned that focus is key and remembering each day what your dream is and acknowledge the steps you’re taking to achieve that dream, that way you stay focused and on track.
So, there you have it. The UK F.A.M.E Teams top tips for emerging hairdressers!
Our conversation didn’t stop just there though. Nick then went onto discuss the importance of constantly retraining. ‘No matter what level you are as a hairdresser, every day you pick up something new. I’ve been hairdressing for over 30 years and even today I’ll see something that I like that inspires me.’
