Interested in pursuing a career in Hair or Barbering, but don’t know where to start? Don’t stress! We’ve broken down our two study tracks for you to help you decide which option is best for you.

At The Masters, we offer two modes of study for Hair & Barbering: FastTrack and Apprenticeship. Find out the difference between the two and the benefits of each below, and hear from students and alumni from both study tracks!

Fast Track

The Fast Track Hairdressing & Barbering study mode means you’ll study with us at the academy full time: 3 days per week for 1 year. 2 of these days are spent in a classroom setting, and 1 is spent learning practical skills in our student-led salon, Salon T.M.

There’s a strong focus on theory-based learning in Fast Track Hairdressing & Barbering, but you’ll still get practical training through in-salon learning.

You don’t need any previous skills or experience to enrol in this study option, so it’s perfect for students who are just starting out in the industry.

Meet Vanessa, Fast Track Hairdressing alum

After trying her hand in a few different creative industries, Vanessa decided to enrol in our Fast Track Hairdressing course. Through this course, she discovered her love of hairdressing and now works at Tremayne Salon in Toorak, helping clients look and feel their best.

“I was drawn to The Masters specifically because they offered the Fast Track option through their hair college, HeadMasters. It was such a good decision because it was very consistent. I sometimes find it hard to start something and finish it the week after, because I tend to forget or lose my rhythm. But being in the Fast Track meant that I could start something and go back to school the next day and finish it. It was also good for me because it was only one year.”

Apprenticeship

Our apprenticeship track is designed for individuals who are employed as junior hairdressers or barbers at a hair salon or barbershop prior to enrolling at The Masters.

Apprentices come to the academy 1 day per week for 3 years. This study track is more practically based and allows you to work towards a Hairdressing or Barbering qualification while training under a hairdresser or barber in a professional setting.

Meet Joshua, Hairdressing Student & Apprentice

While he was working in retail, Joshua’s hairdresser suggested a spontaneous career change and offered Joshua an apprenticeship at Pearl Blonde salon in Prahran. Shortly after, he enrolled at The Masters to become qualified!

“It is important to learn and be trained on the job, interacting with real clients. However, getting to step away from the salon one day a week allows me to learn the fundamentals and a range of different techniques from the amazing HeadMasters teachers as well. There’s no one way to do anything in hairdressing, so learning from a range of different people is vital in developing good habits and increasing your knowledge as a stylist.
